Wellness Check

I stumbled across this poem by Andrea Gibson the other day and I couldn’t ignore it.

“In any moment,

on any given day,

I can measure

my welness

by this question:

Is my attention on loving,

or is my attention on

who isn’t loving me?”

This is so powerful to me because it is so accurate. I can tell within minutes of talking to a potential new client whether they’re going to be capable of working with me on their case and being forward-looking or whether they are still in a blame-placing mindset about who their soon-to-be-ex is spending their time with.

Focusing on the lack in other people gets us nowhere. Spending our limited mental and emotional energy on people that do not spend their energy on us is a recipe for unwellness.

Put your energy into loving things. Loving yourself, loving what you do with your time and attention, loving the people that love you back – or finding the people that will love you back. You will be a much healthier and satisfied person by focusing on the positive and loving parts of life.

Don’t bother with the people that aren’t loving you. They don’t need to exist in the loving world you are creating.
