I find it hard to be optimistic sometimes. The world is filled with terrible things, terrible news, terrible futures, terrible pasts, all the terrible all the time.
But the world is filled with plenty of wonderful too.
It is just as likely that good things will happen as bad things will happen. So why we do we expect the worst?
It is sometimes a challenge to enjoy the good moments. We enjoy the sunshine even if the forecast is for rain. We enjoy the weekend even if we have to go back to a job we hate. We enjoy the beginnings of relationships even if they are destined for failure or heartbreak.
Enjoy and embrace the good parts. Remember that it’s just as likely that chance circumstances break in your favor as it is that they don’t. Bracing for the worst and expecting the worst just diminishes your ability to appreciate the good.
Expecting the worst often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When we expect the worst from a partner, we often don’t leave room for the best. When we focus on the worst parts of a job, we don’t acknowledge or appreciate the benefits of it. When we look for the bad in mankind, we will surely find it.
But if you look for the best though? That’s when magic happens. When you give your partner acceptance and support? They often rise to a new level. When we celebrate the benefits about our job – even if it’s only the financial stability it allows or the relationships with your coworkers – we do the job better and our overall mental health improves. When we focus our attention on the good things happening in the world, we want to add more good to it.
Focusing on what’s good about right now, and not bracing for whatever tomorrow may bring, actually makes us more able to weather future storms. Give yourself a break in the sunshine. Be happy with your world and the world at large for even just a day. Celebrate the good and refuse to acknowledge the bad for a day. You will be calmer and happier as you face whatever tomorrow brings. That’s a problem for FutureYou. TodayYou is having a good day.
Enjoy today’s sunshine. Regardless of what tomorrow brings.
